The Annapolis and Baltimore communities are mourning the loss of Chris Canty, a man whose warmth, passion, and love of music left a lasting mark on countless lives. Known for his work at Brown Bag Industries, Secret Spot Pizza Co., and Riverside Taphouse, Chris was more than a colleague or a bartender-he was a friend, a connector, and a champion for local musicians. 

 

Chris lived in Federal Hill, Maryland, where his generosity of spirit and signature smile became well-known to friends, family, and patrons alike. To many, Chris was the kind of person who not only encouraged others to pursue their passions but actively created opportunities for them to do so. His love of live music was legendary, and he carried that love into everything he did.​

 

Musician Johnny Poulos shared a moving reflection that speaks to Chris's character and impact: "The last time I saw Chris Canty was the last time I played a gig at a bar in Baltimore that he was tending. After I loaded everything out, I made it a point to come back in, say bye and tell him that I loved him. There was a look of swift recognition in his eye that I meant that, and he immediately said, 'I love you too, man,' and flashed that huge signature smile.

 

"​That simple exchange reflects the essence of Chris-genuine, open-hearted, and unafraid to give love freely. His ability to make others feel seen and appreciated was one of his greatest gifts.​

 

Poulos also remembered how Chris had been pivotal in his musical journey. "Chris booked me for my first solo gig, probably 20 years ago.  He also got me into O'Brien's Oyster Bar & Seafood Tavern, which turned into a 10-year Open Mic adventure. He was also pivotal in connecting me with all the venues l've played on the Eastern Shore over the years. In fact, over the years, I'm fairly certain that he got me booked at nearly every bar he ever worked at.

 

"For musicians across the region, Chris was more than a supporter-he was a lifeline. He loved live music, believed in its power, and made sure that performers had a space to share their talents. His friends remember him as "a fierce friend and a beacon of energy and light.

 

"​The grief surrounding his loss is profound, but his impact will endure through the music, friendships, and memories he fostered. Johnny Poulos's words carry a message Chris himself would have embraced: "Tell your friends and family that you love them, every single chance that you get. You never know when they'll be gone. This one really hurts. Ilove you, Chris.
